Archive material and source history

The Irish Descendants formed in 1969 in Dublin, playing traditional Irish folk music. Their version of 'Raggle Taggle Gypsy' became one of their best-known songs, along with 'Barret's Privateers' and 'The Black And Tans'.

They released their self-titled debut album in 1973. Some critics at the time questioned their approach to traditional material, but the band kept playing their way. They put out several more records, including 'Raggle Taggle Gypsy' in 1974 and a live album recorded at Dublin's National Stadium in 1980.

The group's lineup included Patrick Street on vocals and guitar, John Sheehan on guitar and banjo, Liam Shanahan on bass, and Michael Ho. They played with a straightforward energy that connected with audiences who wanted to hear the old songs done with feeling.
