The Iron Man formed in East London in 1975, with bassist Steve Harris at the center. Their name came from a medieval torture device, which fit the raw sound they were developing. Early members included vocalist Paul Di'Anno, guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton, and drummer Clive Burr.
Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1980, and the track "Iron Man" became an immediate staple. Other songs from that era, like "A Time Of Indecision" and "End Of The World," showed their range.
Over the decades, the lineup shifted, with guitarist Adrian Smith and drummer Nicko McBrain joining to help shape their twin-guitar harmonies and driving rhythms. Harris remained the constant, steering the band through numerous albums and tours without losing that core intensity.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
