Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Itals were a Jamaican roots reggae trio from Kingston, formed in the mid-1970s with Keith Porter, David Isaacs, and Ronnie Davis. They recorded songs like 'In a Dis a Time' and 'Seeing Is Believing' that blended soulful harmonies with socially conscious lyrics.

Their debut album 'Brutal Out Deh' came out in 1977, followed by records including 'Give Me Power' in 1978 and 'Ital Vital' in 1979. Porter handled lead vocals and lyrics, Isaacs provided harmony vocals and songwriting, and Davis played drums and percussion.

Some of their material, particularly 'In a Dis a Time,' addressed political and social conditions in Jamaica directly. The group's work from that period remains a clear example of roots reggae's vocal traditions meeting straightforward commentary.
