The Junior Varsity formed in Northern California around 2006, starting with Kyle Crow and guitarist Jordan Lawlor playing together. They eventually became a quartet with bassist Ken Stringfellow and drummer Patrick Carney. Their debut album 'Anti-Climactic' came out in 2008, with the title track gaining some attention for its reflective tone.
They followed up with albums like 'The Great American Novel' and 'Songs for the Disillusioned,' which showed them working with a more polished sound while keeping to themes of everyday disconnection. Songs like 'Cinematographic' and 'Don't Forget To Set The House On Fire Before You Crawl Into Bed' have the kind of straightforward, slightly weary indie rock feel that became their thing.
Crow remained the main songwriter through their run, with Lawlor on guitar and Stringfellow on bass. They didn't chase trends or blow up huge, just put out a few records that found their listeners.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
