The Las: A Tale of Triumph and Tribulation
Their breakout single, "There She Goes," released in 1980, became an instant classic and ascended to the top of the UK charts. The song's ethereal beauty and bittersweet tale of lost love resonated with listeners, solidifying The Las' status as a burgeoning music force.
However, the band's success was not without its challenges. Mavers' volatile personality and relentless pursuit of perfection often led to strained relationships within the group. In 1982, guitarist Nick Beggs departed, followed by bassist John McGeogh in 1983.
Undeterred, Mavers pressed on, releasing a series of critically acclaimed albums throughout the '80s. Despite their musical brilliance, commercial success proved elusive.
Controversies also plagued the band. In 1984, Mavers was arrested for possession of cocaine, casting a shadow over The Las' reputation. But their true demise came in 1989 when Polydor Records dropped them from their roster.
In the ensuing years, The Las disbanded and Mavers retreated into seclusion. However, the band's legacy lived on.
