Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Left Rights formed in London in the late 1970s with Keith Levene on vocals and guitar, Jah Wobble on bass, and Rat Scabies on drums. Their debut single 'Little Hard Ons' came out in 1979 with lyrics that got some attention for being sexually direct. The band's sound had a raw punk energy at first, but they started working in reggae and dub elements as they went along.

They put out albums through the 1980s like 'Public Image' in 1982 and 'Method of Destruction' in 1984. Wobble left the band in 1980, and there were reports of internal tensions. Their songs included 'Alabaster Street' and 'Bruja de Los Jaime' among others.

Levene's guitar playing had an angular quality, and Wobble's bass lines carried a dub feel that became part of their sound. They developed a cult following rather than mainstream popularity, and their music stayed confrontational and experimental through those years.
