Archive material and source history

The Mills Brothers started as four brothers from Piqua, Ohio, Herbert, Harry, Don, and John Jr., who began singing together in 1928. They got their break on Chicago radio station WGN and had an early hit with "Tiger Rag" in 1930. Their sound was built around close vocal harmonies, with each brother handling a different part.

During the 1940s, they recorded several songs that became standards, including "Paper Doll," "You Always Hurt The One You Love," and "Till Then." John Jr. served in the Army during World War II, and Danny Buckner filled in temporarily. The group continued performing through lineup changes and a legal dispute with their former manager.

They kept recording and performing into the 1950s and 1960s, with songs like "Nevertheless" and "Chanson D'amour" in their repertoire. The original brothers have all passed away, but their recordings of those tight vocal arrangements remain.
