The Operation formed in Los Angeles in 2002, originally calling themselves Operation: Cliff Clavin. The lineup included Jason Hill on vocals, Anthony Razo and Steve Edwars on guitars, Matthew Johnson on bass, and Brian Smith on drums. Their debut album '8th and Washington' came out in 2004, with the title track becoming one of their better-known songs.
They followed that with several more albums over the next decade or so, including 'In My Bones' in 2007, 'American Machines' in 2011, 'Summer Drugz' in 2014, and 'Hazardous' in 2017. Other songs from their catalog include 'A New Math,' 'Beaten By The Best,' and 'Ships In Bottles.'
Their lyrics sometimes touched on difficult subjects like addiction and depression, which occasionally drew criticism. The band's sound pulled from alternative rock and punk, with Hill's vocals and the guitar work from Razo and Edwars being central to it.
