The Plays formed in São Paulo in 1995 with Felipe Catto on vocals, Bruno Telles on guitar, Felipe Mar on bass, and Fabiano Chagas on drums. They released their debut album 'Roda Viva' in 1997, which mixed samba, bossa nova, and pop. Early on, they had trouble finding a record deal and often paid for their own recordings.
In 2000, their song 'Festa Contagiante' became a radio hit in Brazil and gained attention internationally. Another track, 'Quer namorar comigo,' also appears among their popular songs. The band released several more albums including 'Baile na Pista' in 2003 and 'Dois em Um' in 2006.
In 2005, vocalist Felipe Catto came out as gay, which drew some criticism from conservative listeners. The band supported him and continued performing. They've recorded an acoustic session for MTV and have been involved with social causes.
