The Riff formed in Rio de Janeiro and released their first album, 'Na Estrada,' in 1980. Their sound leaned toward hard rock and blues, with Serginho Herval's raspy vocals and Fernando Guerreiro's guitar work. They put out several albums through the 1980s, including 'A Correria do Rock 'n' Roll' in 1983 and 'O Grande Encontro' in 1985.
Serginho Herval faced drug possession charges in 1982, which affected the band's reputation for a time. They kept recording, though, with later albums like 'Serginho e o Riff' in 1994 and 'Aquilo que dá pra Fazer' in 2016. The lineup included Bruno Garcia on bass and Ivan Busic on drums.
Their song 'Cereja' became something of an anthem, and tracks like 'Incidente em Berlim' and 'Outubro' show their range. The Riff's music had a raw, straightforward energy that connected with Brazilian rock listeners.
