The Romantics formed in Detroit in 1977 with Wally Palmar on vocals and guitar, Mike Skill on bass, Coz Canler on guitar, and Brad Elvis on drums. Their self-titled debut EP got them some early attention, but it was their second album 'In Heat' that really broke through. The single 'Talking In Your Sleep' from that album became a hit, reaching the Top 5 in the U.S. and Top 10 in the U.K.

Their earlier song 'What I Like About You' also became a staple, though it never charted as high as 'Talking In Your Sleep.' They followed up with albums like 'National Breakout' and 'Strictly Personal,' keeping to their straightforward power pop sound. In 1984, Palmar faced accusations that the song 'One in a Million' borrowed too heavily from Prince's 'Little Red Corvette,' which he denied.

By the mid-1980s, Canler and Elvis had left the band. Palmar and Skill brought in new members and kept recording, putting out albums like 'Rhythm Romance' and 'Jitterbug,' but they never matched their earlier commercial success. The band went on hiatus in 1990, and various legal disputes over rights and royalties followed in the years after.
