The Rubinoos formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s around guitarist Tommy Dunbar, bassist John Rubino, and drummer Donn Spindt. Their early sound drew from the jangly guitars and vocal harmonies of bands like The Byrds and The Beach Boys. They released their self-titled debut album in 1977, followed by 'Back to the Drawing Board.'
In 1983, their song 'Revenge of the Nerds' was featured in the comedy film of the same name. The single became a surprise hit that brought the band mainstream attention. They released several albums through the 1980s including 'Basement Tapes' in 1982 and 'Party of Two' in 1984.
After their breakthrough, the band saw some lineup changes, including the departure of original guitarist Tommy Dunbar. They continued recording through the 1990s with albums like 'Basement Tapes Volume 2' in 1990. Other songs in their catalog include '123 Forever' and 'Alright without you.'
