The Running Mates formed in the early 2000s with Scott Vener on lead vocals and guitar, Joe Arthur on bass, and Jimmy Gnecco on drums and vocals. Their song "What's Up?" became a breakout single that got them some attention. They put out two albums, "If You're Feeling Sinister" in 2002 and "Bad Blood" in 2004.
Arthur left the band in 2003, and Gnecco followed in 2005, which ended things for The Running Mates. Vener had some substance abuse issues that reportedly contributed to the tension. They didn't last long as a group, but those two albums still turn up in conversations about that early-2000s alternative rock sound.
