Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Ruts came out of London in 1977, with Malcolm Owen on vocals, John 'Segs' Jennings on bass, Dave Ruffy on guitar, and Paul Fox on drums. Their name came from 'rudies', a nod to Jamaican street culture that hinted at the reggae grooves they'd weave into their punk sound. They put out their first album, 'The Crack', in 1979, which included the single 'Jah War'.

Owen died of a heroin overdose in 1981, not long after the band had gotten back together. They'd released one more studio album, 'Grin and Bear It', before that. Songs like 'Babylon's Burning' and 'In a Rut' kept turning up on compilations and live recordings afterward, so the music didn't just disappear.
