The Saints

The Saints formed in Brisbane in 1973 with Chris Bailey, Kym Bradshaw, Ed Kuepper, and Ivan Rando. They were playing a raw, stripped-down version of rock that aligned with punk's energy before many international acts had broken through. Their 1977 single "(I'm) Stranded" became an international touchstone, capturing a sense of alienation that resonated far beyond Australia.

That single anchored their debut album of the same name, followed by records like "Eternally Yours" and "Prehistoric Sounds" before the decade was out. Bailey remained the constant through various lineup shifts, which at times included members like Barriemore Barlow. Songs like "This Perfect Day" and "Lipstick On Your Collar" showed their range within a tense, economical sound.

They faced criticism for blunt lyrics and a confrontational style, which only solidified their standing with a dedicated audience. The Saints' early work provided a blueprint for independent rock that valued immediacy over polish, and their influence quietly rippled through alternative music for years after.
