The Shuffles were a doo-wop group that started in New York City in the late 1950s. Their first single, "Sha la la I need you," came out in 1959 and became a hit, with Bobby Byrd singing lead. The song had a catchy melody and harmonies that stuck with listeners.
After Byrd died in a car accident in 1961, the group kept going with a new lineup. Johnny Carter took over as lead singer in 1964, and they released songs like "Love Potion No. 9" and "I'm So Glad." Their sound shifted a bit then, which didn't sit well with everyone who liked their earlier work.
They stayed active through the 1960s, playing shows and putting out albums, but nothing else reached the same level as that first single. In the 1990s, there was some renewed interest in doo-wop, and The Shuffles played at a few nostalgia concerts and put out a compilation.
