The Silver Jews

The Silver Jews formed in 1989 around David Berman, a poet and musician who had previously been in The Red Krayola. He was joined by Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, and Will Oldham for their debut album 'Starlite Walker' in 1994. Their music drew from folk and country, but with a lo-fi sensibility that felt homemade and slightly off-kilter.

Berman's lyrics were the center of the band's appeal, full of self-deprecating humor and odd, introspective turns. Songs like 'Random Rules' and 'Dallas' had a wry detachment that felt both clever and genuinely weary. The band developed a cult following through albums like 1998's 'American Water' and 2001's 'Bright Flight', which captured that particular blend of literary wit and ragged melody.

Berman's personal struggles with depression and addiction were part of the band's story, making their live shows unpredictable and sometimes difficult. But the records themselves held up, songs like 'Honk If You're Lonely' and 'Slow Education' managed to be funny, sad, and strangely beautiful all at once.
