The Soft Boys formed in Cambridge in the late 1970s around Robyn Hitchcock. Their sound mixed psychedelic folk with punk energy, often wrapped in surreal lyrics. Early songs like "Old Pervert" and "(I Want to Be An) Anglepoise Lamp" showed their off-kilter approach, which caught the attention of BBC DJ John Peel.

Their 1980 album Underwater Moonlight became their most lasting work, featuring tracks like "Black Snake Diamond Rock" and "Dreams." The band's lineup shifted frequently, with Hitchcock, Kimberley Rew, Matthew Seligman, and Alan Davies among those who played in various configurations. They broke up in 1981 after just a few years together.

Hitchcock went on to a long solo career, but the Soft Boys' brief catalog kept finding new listeners. That 1980 album in particular developed a quiet reputation among musicians who appreciated its odd angles and wiry guitar work.
