The Song formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1975 with Milton Nascimento on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Ronaldo Bastos on guitar, Chico Batera on bass, and Robertinho Silva on drums. Their self-titled debut came out the following year. In 1977 they released the album Clube da Esquina 2, which included the track Alguém Acreditou Em Mim.
That song became something of an anthem in Brazil, with Nascimento's voice carrying lyrics that resonated with listeners during a complicated political period. The band's lineup shifted over time, though Nascimento remained the constant presence.
Other songs like Da Água Pro Vinho and Basta Acreditar kept them on Brazilian radio through the late 1970s and into the 1980s. They never quite broke internationally the way some hoped, but their music found a steady audience at home.
