Archive material and source history

The S.O.S. Band formed in Atlanta in 1977, with James "JT" Taylor on lead vocals, Mary Davis on vocals, Billy Osborne on keyboards, Jason "JT" Wright on bass, Willie "Sonny K" Killebrew on drums, and Bruno Speight on guitar. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1980 and included the single "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," which became a Top 10 R&B hit.

They released several albums through the 1980s, including "Just the Way You Like It" in 1982, "On the Rise" in 1983, and "Too Hot to Stop" in 1984. Their music had a danceable R&B and funk feel, with songs like "Just Be Good to Me," "Weekend Girl," and "Tell Me If You Still Care" getting regular play on radio and in clubs.

Some members reportedly struggled with substance abuse, and the band faced criticism at times for being too commercial. But they kept recording and performing through much of the decade, maintaining a presence on the R&B charts with their groove-oriented sound.
