The Sound formed in the late 1970s around Adrian Borland and Michael Dudley, who had previously played together in a band called Second Layer. Their first album, Jeopardy, came out in 1980, followed by From the Lions' Mouth in 1981. That second album included Heartland, a song that became one of their most recognizable tracks with its atmospheric keyboards and Borland's searching vocals.
Borland sang and played guitar, with Dudley on keyboards, Graham Bailey on bass, and Mike Dudley on drums. Their music drew from post-punk and experimental sources, but they never quite found a commercial audience despite releasing several more albums through the mid-1980s, including All Fall Down and Heads and Hearts.
Other songs like Winning and Resistance showed their ability to balance melodic hooks with a darker, more introspective edge. The band stopped recording together after 1986's In the Hothouse, though their early albums continued to find listeners interested in that particular strain of British post-punk.
