The Standells formed in 1962, originally calling themselves The Ravens. They were a Boston band that put out their first single, "Dirty Water," in 1966. That song, with its rough-edged guitar and a chorus that stuck, became their calling card. It's still the track people know them for.

They released a handful of albums in the late 1960s, including 'The Standells' and 'Try It.' Other songs like "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" and "Why Pick On Me?" followed a similar garage-rock vein. The band's lineup centered on Dick Dodd on vocals and drums, with Gary Anderson on lead guitar, John Charles Barron on rhythm guitar, and Tony Valentino on bass.

They broke up in 1972. "Dirty Water" outlasted the group, becoming a kind of unofficial anthem for Boston. The song's simple, driving sound later caught the ear of punk bands in the 1970s.
