The 4 Star Lovers formed in Los Angeles in 1964 with Michael Merchant on vocals, Robert Wagner on guitar, Timothy White on bass, and Andrew James on drums. They recorded for Liberty Records and put out their debut single 'Don't Blame Me' in 1967. That song, with Merchant's falsetto and a haunting melody, became their best-known track.
Their music drew from psychedelic rock, folk, and R&B, and they were known for ethereal harmonies in their live shows. Another song of theirs, 'Richard,' appears in their catalog, though it never reached the same recognition as 'Don't Blame Me.'
By the late 1960s, the band's experimental tendencies reportedly created some friction with commercial expectations. Their recorded output was limited, and they seem to have faded from view after that period.
