The States formed in 2010 with Tyler McCormack on vocals and guitar, Austin Wilkins on bass, Sean Hennessy on drums, and Ethan Mathes on keyboards. Mathes left in 2012, and Josh Gervais joined to play keyboards and sing. They put out an EP called 'Ignorance Is Bliss' in 2011, followed by another self-titled EP in 2013.
Their 2014 single 'Anxious' got some attention, and they released albums in 2017 and 2020 called 'Control Freak' and 'Disorder'. Another track, 'God's Numbers', appears among their top songs. The band's lyrics and stage presence sometimes drew criticism for being too political, though some listeners appreciated that directness.
McCormack, Wilkins, Hennessy, and Gervais make up the current lineup. They've kept at it as an indie rock band without much fanfare about influence or legacy, just putting out records when they can.
