The Steel Wheels formed in 2002 around vocalist and guitarist Trent Wagler, bassist Brian Dickel, and mandolinist Jay Lapp. They worked out of the Blue Ridge Mountains area, playing a mix of bluegrass, folk, and Americana. Their early years involved the usual van tours and financial uncertainty that most independent bands face.
In 2006 they released the album "Red Wing," which led to work with producer John Jennings. The following year's "Lay Down Your Burdens" gave them wider recognition, with the title track becoming something of a signature song. Their catalog includes tracks like "The Race," "Andrea," and "Breaking Like The Sun."
The band's lineup settled with Wagler, Dickel, Lapp, and drummer Eric Brubaker. In 2015 they faced criticism over a photo shoot at a Confederate memorial, which they apologized for. They've continued recording, with albums like "Wild as We Came Here" in 2017 and "No More Rain" in 2020.
