The Steelers came together in Pittsburgh in the late 1960s, originally calling themselves The Ventures. Their lineup included James "Spider" Salvato on vocals and guitar, Jim "Pudge" Ross on bass, and brothers George "The Hawk" Heiges on keyboards and Ray "The Hawk" Heiges on drums. They found their footing with the 1970 album "Confusion," whose title track became a national hit and gave the band its first real audience.
That early momentum was hard to sustain. Personal issues, particularly Salvato's struggles with addiction, led to internal friction and his eventual departure from the group in 1975. The band kept recording through the decade, putting out albums like "Second Opinion" and "October Rust," but the lineup shifted around the original members.
Some of their material stirred up trouble. A song called "Statue of Liberty" drew accusations of blasphemy, and their live shows sometimes drew rowdy crowds. They managed to release a few more records, including "Whiskey Woman" in 1977, but the original four-piece sound was gone.
