The Swell Season began as Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, two musicians from Dublin who met through the film 'Once.' That movie featured their music and gave them a wider audience. Their first album came out in 2006, simply called 'The Swell Season,' and included songs like 'The Rain' and 'Fitzcarraldo.'

They followed it with 'Strict Joy' in 2009, which had tracks such as 'Low Rising' and 'In These Arms.' Their sound was mostly acoustic folk, built around Hansard's guitar and both of their voices. They toured for a few years, playing those songs live.

After 2011's 'Hazey Jane II,' which had 'High Horses' and 'Two Tongues,' they stopped recording together. Hansard and Irglova each went on to other projects, but the music they made as The Swell Season still gets played, especially the songs from 'Once.'
