The Tokens were a vocal group from Brooklyn, New York, who formed in the early 1960s. Their lineup originally included Hank Medress, Neil Sedaka, and Phil Margo. They worked with producer Hugo Peretti, and their first single was 'Tonight I Fell in Love.' It didn't do much, but their next release changed things.
In 1961, they put out 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' a song based on a 1939 composition by Solomon Linda. It became a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, driven by their harmonies. They followed it with albums like 'The Tokens Sing the Lion Sleeps Tonight' and 'The Tokens on Broadway.'
After Sedaka left in 1963 to go solo, the group continued as a trio. They had another single, 'I Can Hear Music,' in the 1970s. The Tokens were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.
