The Top Fours formed in Detroit in 1953 with Ivory Joe Hunter, James Thornton, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Levi Stubbs. They had a doo-wop sound with rhythm and blues elements. In 1955, they released "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)," which reached the top of the Billboard R&B charts.
Hunter and Thornton left the group after some time, leaving Benson and Stubbs as the remaining members. The Top Fours kept releasing singles through the 1960s, including songs like "Ask Me" and "Cherie."
There were legal disputes over songwriting credits and royalties for their hit song in the late 1950s. Levi Stubbs died in 2008, with officials calling it a suicide.
