Archive material and source history
The Vander Blues And Jazz formed in New Orleans in the early 1920s, a group of musicians drawn together by the city's blues and jazz clubs. Their lineup included saxophonist Victor Vander, vocalist Ella Mae Carter, pianist Joe "Fingers" Martin, and drummer Charlie "Thunder" Johnson.
They recorded several albums in the 1920s and 1930s, including "The Jazz Age" in 1925 and "Blues in the Night" in 1928. Their 1932 song "Queimei" became particularly notable for its lyrics about an interracial relationship, which drew criticism from some quarters at the time.
The group performed at venues like the Savoy Ballroom and released a live recording from there in 1936. Their activity gradually diminished in later years, but their recordings from that period remain.
