The Vandals formed in Southern California in 1980, part of that region's punk scene. Their early albums like Peace Thru Vandalism (1982) and When in Rome, Do as the Vandals (1984) established their sound, fast, melodic, and laced with satire. The lineup settled around Dave Quackenbush on vocals, Warren Fitzgerald on guitar, Joe Escalante on bass, and Josh Freese on drums.
In 1996, they had a radio hit with 'My Girlfriend,' a cynical pop-punk track that got regular play on alternative stations. The band kept recording through the 2000s and 2010s with albums like Internet Dating Sucks and Hollywood Potato Chip, maintaining their pace and tone without major shifts in style.
Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism, notably the 1984 song 'Urban Struggle,' which took aim at police and sparked some local backlash. The Vandals have mostly stuck to their formula: short, catchy songs with a sneer, delivered by the same core members for decades.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
