The Vibrations formed in Detroit in the early 1960s with Eddie Floyd, James Mitchell, Robert Jones, and Andrew Wright. They put out their first single, "The Sermon," in 1961. In 1965, their cover of Bert Berns' "Hang On Sloopy" became a hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
After the success of "Hang On Sloopy," Floyd and Mitchell left the group in 1966. Jones and Wright continued with new members, releasing albums like "The Vibrations" in 1966 and "Respect" in 1967. The band faced legal disputes over the rights to their biggest song.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
