Editor's note

The White Noise, Manchester's late-70s post-punk experiment

A band from Manchester that blended post-punk with haunting, experimental sounds across five albums in the early 80s.

For a sense of their sound, try 'Woodstock In My Mind' or 'Cosmopolitician'. They're good examples of what they were doing.

They carved out a space where atmosphere mattered more than fitting in. Songs like 'Woodstock In My Mind' have that haunting quality that just sticks with you, and their willingness to tackle difficult subjects gave their music an edge. You can hear echoes of their approach in later bands that valued mood over straightforward rock.

They formed in Manchester in the late 1970s with Alan Gill on vocals and Richard Formby on guitar. Their debut 'An Electric Storm' came out in 1979, followed by four more albums before they called it quits in 1983.

The White Noise formed in Manchester in the late 1970s with Alan Gill on vocals, Richard Formby on guitar, Steve Hall on bass, and Michael Allen on drums. Their early work had a post-punk feel, but they were hard to pin down. Their debut album 'An Electric Storm' came out in 1979, followed by 'What You See Is What You Get' in 1980 and 'Great Big Beautiful Noise' in 1981.

Some of their songs, like 'And All Beautiful Women In It' and 'Woodstock In My Mind,' had a haunting quality that stuck with listeners. They weren't afraid to write about difficult subjects, which sometimes got them into trouble. Their music had an experimental edge that didn't always fit neatly into what was popular at the time.

They put out two more albums, 'The White Noise' in 1982 and 'Sound on Sound' in 1983, before calling it quits. You can still hear echoes of their approach in some later bands that valued atmosphere over straightforward rock.
