The Wild Manzanas formed in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with Mateo "Wild" Manzana on vocals, Fernando "Viper" Ortega on guitar, Carlos "Bull" Rodriguez on bass, and Pablo "Thunder" Ramirez on drums. They played a mix of psychedelic rock and blues that caught attention in the local counterculture scene.
Their debut single "Bad Trip" became their calling card, its lyrics about psychedelic drug use resonating with some listeners while drawing criticism from authorities. The song's success led to two albums, "Beyond the Threshold" and "Into the Void," which included tracks like "Elevation" and "Walking Under The Moon."
The band faced legal trouble over their content, with some concerts reportedly disrupted by police. They broke up in the mid-1970s amid internal conflicts, leaving behind a small catalog that still gets played, particularly "Bad Trip."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
