The Wiyos formed in 1988 with Michael Murphy, Harry Manx, Ruth Moody, and Clarence "Blues" Boyer. Their song "Green Bottle #6" became well-known, though it drew some attention for similarities to older folk material. They put out albums like A Blessed Relief in 1990 and Tomorrow's Gonna Be a Good Day in 1993.
Over time, the group's lineup shifted, with players like John McEuen and Peter Rowan coming through. They kept recording through the 1990s, including Mermaid Avenue Vol. II in 1998. The music mixed folk with blues and Celtic touches, carried by vocal harmonies and acoustic instruments.
While "Green Bottle #6" stayed a touchstone, the band's sound kept moving as members changed. They worked in a space between traditional folk and original writing, without settling into one fixed style.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
