The Yankee Dolar was a New York band in the 1960s led by singer-songwriter Michael "Mickey" McCann. They started out playing small clubs and underground venues, with McCann's writing leaning toward introspective lyrics and unconventional melodies that didn't quite fit the mainstream at first.
Their 1970 single "Catch the Wind" changed things, giving the band wider recognition. The song had a haunting quality that connected with listeners, though some critics found their material too somber or pretentious. The lineup included McCann on vocals and guitar, Tom Mahoney on bass, Bobby DeLucca on drums, and Greg Garcia on keyboards.
They put out a few albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including their self-titled debut in 1968 and "The Dark Side of the Wind" in 1972. The band broke up around the mid-1970s, but has played some reunion shows in more recent years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
