The Young Werewolves came out of the mid-1960s with a sound that mixed rockabilly, surf, and something rougher that would later be called proto-punk. Their first single, 'Midnight Monster Hop,' became a cult favorite. The band was Johnny Lobo on vocals and guitar, Eddie 'The Phantom' Hawkins on bass, and Jake 'The Wolf' Wilson on drums.
They released three albums between 1967 and 1969, including 'Blood on the Moon' and 'Curse of the Howling.' Their live shows were known for being loud and chaotic, which built a reputation but also drew some criticism. Songs like 'Tattooed Aliens' and 'Wolfabilly Blues' carried that same raw, driving energy.
The band broke up around 1970. Johnny Lobo tried a solo career but struggled with personal issues. Eddie Hawkins worked as a session player for other artists. Jake Wilson left music entirely. In the 1990s, there was some renewed interest in their records, and Lobo briefly returned for a reunion tour in 2000 before stepping away again.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
