THE9 formed in 2020 through the survival reality show 'Youth With You 2,' where nine performers were selected from the competition: An Qi, Liu Yuxin, Esther Yu, Yan Yu, Kiki Xu, Shaking, Zhao Xiaotang, Lu Keran, and Xie Keyin. Their debut EP was called 'Sphynx,' and they released songs like 'Gwalla' and 'Dumb Dumb Bomb.'
Some questions came up about whether the group felt authentic or manufactured by the show, and there were management controversies that followed them. They kept working on music anyway, putting out tracks like 'Sphinx' and 'Call Me By My Name.'
An Qi was the leader with strong dance skills, Liu Yuxin served as center with an androgynous style, and Esther Yu brought her own presence to the group. They didn't stay together as a permanent act, but for a couple years they were part of that wave of Chinese pop coming out of competition shows.
