Theon formed in 1985 with Jorge Mautner, Nelson Jacobina, Robson Jorge, and Sergio Noronha. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1987, and the track "Vira de Ladinho" caught on quickly. The song's rhythm drew from Brazil's Northeast traditions, but the band mixed in other sounds too.
They kept recording through the 1990s and early 2000s, putting out albums like "Pra Tudo Se Acabar na Quarta-Feira" in 1990, "O Pão e o Circo" in 1993, and "Manda Bala" in 2000. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social or political themes, which didn't sit well with everyone. The music itself could be unconventional, pulling from jazz, funk, and rock alongside those regional rhythms.
By the time they stopped, Theon had released eight studio albums. "Vira de Ladinho" remained their best-known song, a piece that distilled their approach to blending styles into something that stuck.
