Thergothon

Thergothon formed in Finland in 1990 with Mika Luttinen on guitar and vocals, Sami Kaistinen on bass, and Marko Saarelainen on drums. They released just two studio albums, 1995's 'The Tomb of the Inverted Cross' and 1998's 'Stream from the Heavens', before disbanding the following year. Their sound was slow, heavy, and atmospheric, with lyrics that leaned into themes of despair and the occult.

Songs like 'Crying Blood And Crimson Snow' and 'The Unknown Kadath In The Cold Waste' from their second album became touchstones for a certain kind of doom metal. The music moved at a glacial pace, built around droning riffs and Luttinen's deep, growled vocals. It wasn't about aggression so much as a sustained, heavy atmosphere.

Despite their brief existence and limited output, that second album in particular found an audience. Its particular blend of melody and crushing weight resonated with listeners and later bands, giving Thergothon a persistent, if niche, place in the conversation around extreme doom metal.
