They Say I Say was a band from Manchester, England, with Jonny Byrne on vocals and guitar, Lisa Murphy on bass and vocals, and Sean Regan on drums. Their debut album, "The Weight of the World," came out in the early 2000s, and they worked with producer Paul Bauer on some of their tracks. The song "Hey Shifty, Don't Miss" got a lot of attention when it was released as a single.
Their music had a post-punk feel, with Byrne's guitar work and Murphy's bass lines giving it a tense, driving energy. Songs like "If Only I Had a Dictionary" and "Live Together, Die Alone" leaned into introspective lyrics about alienation and everyday struggles, delivered over tight, melodic arrangements. They didn't sound quite like anyone else at the time, but you could hear bits of Joy Division or The Smiths in the mix if you listened closely.
