They Sleep They Dream formed in Oakland around 2005, when Jonathan Dorr met Mark Kuykendall at a festival. They added Ben Scott on bass and Scott Hanson on drums, making a quartet that worked with ethereal sounds and storytelling. Their debut EP 'It's Like This' came out in 2007, and it included the song 'Bad With Goodbyes,' which caught some attention for its melancholic feel and lyrics about loss.
After that early release, things got complicated. Dorr had personal struggles, and the band's label ran into money problems, which made touring harder. In 2010, a legal fight with their manager led to Kuykendall leaving the group. Dorr and Scott kept going for a while, but the band's output slowed down after that period.
