Archive material and source history

This Is Me Smiling formed in Phoenix in 2006, with Kevin Kaine on vocals and guitar, Jake Bielen on drums, and Nick Gargano on bass. Their debut album came out in 2008, titled after the song 'Say What You're Gonna Say.' That track got some attention, and the record had a straightforward alternative rock feel that connected with listeners.

Over the next few years, the lineup shifted. Gargano left in 2010, replaced by Billy Brimblecom on bass. Bielen departed the following year, and Jason Hrabowskie came in on drums. They put out a second album, 'Miles to Go,' in 2012. Later, Hrabowskie was replaced by Chris Blair, and the band released a third album, 'The Way We Are,' in 2017.

Their songs like 'A better Way to Fall In Love' and 'Goodbye to Each New Day' kept a consistent tone, melodic, a bit emo-tinged, with lyrics that leaned into everyday feelings rather than grand statements. They stayed active through the changes, working in that space between pop-punk and more reflective rock.
