Those Who Lie Beneath formed in Pittsburgh after their previous hardcore band fell apart. Ethan James handled vocals, Jake Martin played guitar, and Sarah Davis was on bass. Their early material had a bleak, introspective quality that didn't immediately connect beyond local shows.
In 1999 they put out a debut album called 'The Last Days of Innocence' that didn't sell well, but it included a track called '8 To 5' that eventually found an audience. The song's portrayal of workday drudgery resonated with listeners, giving the band their first real break.
They followed with albums like 'Unveiled' in 2002, and songs such as 'As The Vultures Circle' and 'Building And Breaking Bridges' continued in a similar vein, dark, melodic rock that touched on industrial and gothic textures without fully committing to either.
