Editor's note

Thunder's London rock, from 1989 to now

A British band that kept playing through grunge and beyond, with songs like 'Love Walked In' and 'The Western Sky'.

For a sense of their range, try 'Love Walked In' from the debut and something like 'The Western Sky' from later on. It's all pretty straightforward British rock.

Thunder matters because they formed in London in 1989 just as grunge was taking over, yet they carved out their own space and kept going. Their debut 'Backstreet Symphony' landed the next year with 'Love Walked In' getting radio play, and they've maintained the same lineup for decades. Songs like 'The Western Sky' show they're still writing material that connects with their audience.

They started with 'Backstreet Symphony' in 1990, then moved through albums like the more reflective 'Behind Closed Doors' in 1995 and the harder-leaning 'Giving the Game Away' in 2003. More recent records include 'Wonder Days' in 2015 and 'Rip it Up', showing they never really stopped.

Thunder formed in London in 1989, right as grunge was taking over. Their debut album 'Backstreet Symphony' came out the next year and did well, with songs like 'Love Walked In' getting radio play. The band's lineup has stayed pretty consistent: Danny Bowes on vocals, Luke Morley and Ben Matthews on guitars, Chris Childs on bass, and Harry James on drums.

They kept putting out records through the '90s and 2000s, sometimes shifting their sound a bit. 'Behind Closed Doors' from 1995 had a more reflective feel, while 2003's 'Giving the Game Away' leaned harder. Some of their other songs that stuck around include 'Low Life In High Places' and 'Don't Wait For Me'.

There was some noise in the mid-'90s about 'Low Life In High Places' sounding too much like someone else's work, but it didn't really slow them down. They've kept at it, releasing albums like 'Wonder Days' in 2015 and 'Rip it Up' more recently.
