Thy Catafalque

Thy Catafalque began in 2003 as the solo project of Hungarian musician Tamás Kátai. It started as a one-person operation, with Kátai handling everything himself, drawing inspiration from cosmic themes and H.P. Lovecraft's writings. Over time, it grew into something more collaborative, with other musicians coming in to contribute to the recordings, though Kátai remains the central figure shaping the sound and lyrics.

The music doesn't fit neatly into traditional black metal categories. It's experimental, with songs like '10⁻²⁰ Ångström' and 'Ashesdance' showing how the project blends atmospheric elements with more challenging, avant-garde structures. The approach has drawn some criticism from purists who prefer more conventional metal, but Thy Catafalque has kept working on its own terms regardless.

They've released eight full-length albums since starting, beginning with 'Sublunary Tragedies' in 2004. That debut set the tone for what followed, records that feel more like explorations than straightforward metal albums. Tracks such as 'Az Eső, Az Eső, Az Eső' and 'Bolygó, Bolyongó' reflect the project's ongoing interest in weaving together different textures and ideas into something that feels both heavy and strangely atmospheric.
