Tiana Maria was born Tiana Rios in 1951 in Brazil. She started playing piano and singing early on, with her father being a guitarist and her mother a singer. In the late 1970s, she began performing professionally in Brazil.
American jazz producer Bob Thiele heard her music and signed her to Blue Note Records in 1985. Her first album for the label was simply called "Tiana Maria." She followed it with "Lady of the Light" in 1987.
Her songs like "Caminho" and "Desequilíbrio Controlado" blend Brazilian rhythms with jazz piano and her own vocals. She writes her own material and plays piano on her recordings.
