Tião Brasil, born Antônio Carlos de Lima, grew up in Rio de Janeiro. Parentinho, whose real name was José Benedito da Silva, came from Brasília. Their different backgrounds didn't stop them from making music together.
Their performances at street festivals and clubs drew attention. In 1980 they released an album called 'Berço De Ouro' that featured the title track. The duo's lyrics sometimes addressed social themes, which led to some friction with authorities.
