Tião Canhoto e Maurinho were a Brazilian duo known for xote, a dance style from the country's northeast. Their song "Xote Pra Dançar" became a classic that brought them national attention. Tião Canhoto, born José Luciano Gonçalves in 1944, handled vocals with a distinctive expressive quality, while Maurinho, born Maurício Rodrigues dos Santos in 1952, played accordion with a soulful touch that matched Tião's singing.
Tião was known for being outspoken and politically active, which sometimes led to censorship and criticism. In 1989, he was in a car accident that left him badly injured and unable to perform for years. Maurinho stayed with him through that time, keeping their music going while Tião recovered.
They put out several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including "Xote Pra Dançar" in 1976, "A Vida do Vaqueiro" in 1977, and "Lamento de um Vaqueiro" in 1979. Their work often drew from vaqueiro, or cowboy, themes, which gave their xote a particular regional flavor.
