Tibúrcio da Estância

Tibúrcio da Estância came out of Estância, Sergipe, and put out a debut album called "Sertão Elétrico" around 2004. The record mixed traditional sertão sounds with rock and electronic music, which got them some attention and also some criticism from purists who felt they were watering things down. They kept at it, though, releasing follow-ups like "Canjica Elétrica" in 2006 and "Forró Eletrônico" in 2008.

You can hear that blend in songs like "Socando Canjica," which features accordion player João Luiz Corrêa, and "Batendo Tição." Their lineup included Tibúrcio on vocals and guitar, Corrêa on accordion, and Lucas da Rocha on percussion. They weren't trying to make museum pieces; the idea seemed to be letting the music change while keeping a foot in where it came from.

Later albums like 2010's "Chega de Saudade" continued in that vein. Tracks such as "Lava Jato" and "Notícia do Rádio" show the same approach, rooted rhythms given a contemporary treatment.
